JEROME ADAMS, MD, MPH 20TH U.S. SURGEON GENERAL (September 2017 - January 2021) AMERICAN BOARD OF ANESTHESIA DIPLOMATE Presidential Fellow and Executive Director of Health Equity (October 2021- Present); Distinguished Professor of Practice in the departments of Pharmacy Practice and Public Health at Purdue University. Dr. Adams served as the operational head / “COO” of the 6000 person USPHS Commissioned Corps, with a total budget of over $1 billion. Provided leadership to and directed oversight of the Office of the Surgeon General, with 15 direct reports and $4 million budget. Advised the HHS Secretary of Health on matters relating to protecting and advancing the public health of the Nation and as appropriate, issued warnings to the public on identified health hazards.
Dr. Jerome Adams, the 20th U.S. surgeon general and a former Indiana state health commissioner, will visit Indiana University as the Kelley School of Business’ Poling Chair of Business and Government. Recipients of the Poling Chair are given the charge to stimulate discussion in the areas of leadership, the critical interactions between private business and government in matters of public policy, enterprise competitiveness and economic growth.
As the Poling Chair for 2022-2023 Dr. Adams will engage with questions about the following topics: The business case of health; Maternal Health; Opioid epidemic; and his life experience and tenure as the Surgeon General.
