Inter and Multidisciplinary Study

The Hutton Honors Notation is awarded to students who demonstrate both academic breadth and depth in the course of their undergraduate degree. Only students admitted to the Hutton Honors College may pursue the Notation. Notation recipients are awarded the Hutton Honors medal at Honors Convocation; the Notation appears on their transcripts and diplomas. The Notation requires:

• two Gateway courses (HHC-H 101 and HHC-H 202)
• at least an "external" minor (a certificate, second major, or second degree in an external field also satisfies this requirement)
• a senior thesis (in nearly all cases, this will be written in a student's major)

A dual degree means pursuing two distinct undergraduate degrees. It is most common for students to complete both a B.S. and a distinct B.A. in the same college or school, but it is also possible--with planning, credits earned before enrolling at IU, and, perhaps, some summer classes--to complete degrees in two different schools. 

A dual degree typically entails 21-45 additional credits, depending on the exact combination. If completed, you will receive two diplomas at graduation and both degrees and all majors will appear on your transcript.

If the two degrees are in separate schools, you will have full access to school-specific resources (including study-abroad programs, extracurriculars, career fairs, recruiting events, graduation events) in both schools.

If you're interested in pursuing two degrees simultaneously, talk to your advisors as soon as possible in your academic career (and be stubborn if they try to talk you out of this plan). Here are some recently completed dual-degree combinations:

• B.A.J. Journalism and B.A. Jewish Studies [two degrees in the same school]
• B.S. International Studies and B.A. French [two degrees in the same school]
• B.S.B. Economic Consulting and B.S.O.F. Clarinet [two degrees in different schools]
• B.S. Informatics and B.A. Media [two degrees in different schools] 
• B.M. Piano Performance and B.A. Math [two degrees in different schools]

A joint degree is a single degree that is the result of structured collaboration between two or more schools or colleges. You will receive a single diploma at graduation with all participating schools listed on the certificate.

Joint-degree students have access to school-specific resources (including study-abroad programs, extracurriculars, career fairs, recruiting events, graduation events) in all of the collaborating schools.

Administratively, one school is designated as the "home school" for the degree and your academic advisor will be from that school. You will attend graduation ceremonies and other recognition events with the home school. The full list of undergraduate joint-degree programs on the Bloomington campus is as follows (home schools are underlined):

• B.S. Cybersecurity and Global Policy (College of Arts and Sciences, Hamilton-Lugar School of Global and International Studies, Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering)

A double major involves completing the requirements for two majors that are offered by a single degree.

A double major typically entails 15-21 additional credits (depending on the combination). You will receive a single diploma upon graduation; your transcript will list both your majors. Some common (and not so common) double majors include:
