HON‐H 232 Meaningful Writing: The Art & Skill of Written Communication will refine and enhance skills in written communication. We will read, analyze, and appraise a range of prose and poetry as a means of informing writing style and technique. We will craft written documents using varied approaches to tone/diction, affect/mood, structure/organization, and content/ideas to achieve an identified purpose.
The course foregrounds a student‐centered approach, with opportunities for student interest to inform reading selections and deliverables. Revisions of written work will be emphasized, highlighting the benefits of feedback and an iterative process. We will critically engage with the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in creating written documents, evaluating the benefits, ethical implications, and limitations.
To write is relational, even if the intended audience is only one’s self. We will consider how the irreducible “who” informs our writing, as much (or more than) the “what” and the “how.”
